"Like Nothing You've Ever Seen Before!"
declared a theatrical poster for the 1961 monster-on-the-loose movie "Gorgo." Even then it wasn't true. Movies about a monster that lays waste to one of the world's major cities were never more popular than in the 1950s. "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" demolished New York in 1953. "Godzilla" attacked Tokyo in 1954. In 1955 the tentacles of a giant octopus took a swipe at San Francisco in "It Came From Beneath the Sea." And after travelling "20 Million Miles to Earth" in 1957 the Venusian Ymir tore up Rome. Despite relying on a tried and tested formula, though, "Gorgo" was a huge hit in its day and can now be seen again on DVD. [More
