Production Diary: Day 12

The high seas are nothing to be laughed at, unless of course you're safe on dry land and only pretending to be in mortal danger. Day 12 of PJ's Production Diary shows us a wet day for the crew of the SS Venture. A fake storm throws the crew around a-la 'Star Trek'. We also get our first looks at Colin Hanks, Evan Parke, and Ray Woolf whom we are only now learning that he plays the 'helmsman'. On a personal note, I will never be borrowing Adrien Brody's wetsuit....ever! [QT 240x135] [QT 320x176] [QT 480x270] [Bit Torrents Mirror]

Curtis Up for Kong?

9/21/04, 6:39 pm EST - Xoanon

Hamo455 writes: Not sure if this is any kind of scoop, but I live in Wellington and I just saw kiwi actor Cliff Curtis (star of Whale Rider, Collateral Damage etc) walking down Courtenay Place. This doesn't mean anything of itself, except he doesn't live in Wellington and does a lot of work overseas now. I can think of only one project he could be attached to if he's here, and being a Maori he could well be a Skull Island local. That's all speculation on my part, but it seems possible and has a certain logic to it.

Look! Up in the Sky! It's Another Plane!

9/19/04, 3:09 pm EST - Xoanon

Production Diary: Planes

It is a sure bet that Cooper & Schoedsack had many challenges to overcome when they made the original King Kong in 1933. But trying to avoid jumbo jet airliners while shooting was not one of them! As many of you know Peter Jacksons studio is located within walking distance of Wellington Airport, and being that close to those loud planes calls for some special jobs to be created! Be sure to check out our first look at young actor Jamie Bell, who plays Jimmy. [QT 240x135] [QT 320x176] [QT 480x270] [Bit Torrents Mirror]

Gorillas in his midst - Serkis goes wild

9/19/04, 2:53 pm EST - Xoanon

British actor Andy Serkis is so determined to get it right playing King Kong, he visited Rwanda to observe endangered wild gorillas. Serkis, now in Wellington for Peter Jackson's $200 million movie, will be the basis for the computer-generated giant gorilla, in the same way he was for Gollum in The Lord of the Rings films. He will also play Lumpy the cook on the ship Venture. [More]

'Kong' remake star was thrilled to meet Wray

9/19/04, 2:14 pm EST - Xoanon

Actress Naomi Watts met Fay Wray, the woman who became famous as the damsel who fascinated the giant gorilla King Kong, just a couple of months before Wray's death Aug. 8 at age 96. And it happened at the invitation of Rick McKay, who grew up in Beech Grove. Watts -- on the telephone recently from New Zealand to promote her film "We Don't Live Here Anymore" -- will try to fill Wray's shoes in director Peter Jackson's ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy) remake of "King Kong," the classic 1933 black-and-white film. Watts will be seen in several upcoming movies, including "The Ring 2," "I Heart Huckabees" and "Stay." [More]

More Kong in 'Sky Captain'

9/17/04, 9:50 am EST - Celeborn

Harry from AintitCool.com sends in this tidbit: 'In SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW - when Sky Captain is coming up behind the 8 robots stomping down the street and is readying his "magneto-bomb" to drop onto one of the robot's legs, if you look at the background of the shots at the Empire State Building, you'll see a fuzzy familiar character scaling the Empire State Building. Looks like Kerry was shooting around the same time that Peter was shooting his new stuff for Kong, and Sky Captain, just didn't have the money to digitally remove that crazy monkey from the shots. I spotted him in two shots.'

Happy Birthday Kyle Chandler!

9/17/04, 9:37 am EST - Xoanon

'Sky Captain's' Shout Out to Kong

9/16/04, 11:49 pm EST - Celeborn

Kong fan Craig from Ohio found something rather interesting when watching the Apple.com exclusive clip for 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.' As the squadron of planes fly into the ocean you will see them pass the wreck of a ship. The lights from a plane shine on the word 'Venture' and a decimated cage is clearly noticeable on the deck. Check it out for yourself! [Click Here] (if there is interest expressed on the boards, we'll try to isolete the exact sequence and post it)

The SS Venture Images

9/16/04, 6:46 pm EST - Xoanon

Kong Spy Janie sends along these images of the SS Venture, the real one, currently sitting in Wellington Harbour. If you've watched PJ's Production Diaries you'd know that his fear of water has forced the production to create a mockup of this boat in a parking lot at the studio. [More]
