6/25/05, 4:05 pm EST - Xoanon

Roheryn writes: During the American Film Institute's salute to George Lucas this evening on the USA cable network, there was a segment in which prominent filmmakers paid tribute to Lucas, acknowledging how he had blazed a trail for them with cutting edge special effects. The slimmer Peter Jackson made a brief comment about how motion capture and digital effects have made nothing impossible in film now, thanks in no small part to Lucas' work. As he spoke, they showed a clip of Gollum, as well as of Legolas bringing down the mumak. [AFI.com]

'King Kong' looks like a monster hit

6/24/05, 9:15 pm EST - Xoanon

Several months ago, Ubisoft announced it was working with director Peter Jackson to create the official video game of his upcoming film, "King Kong." "Peter Jackson's King Kong" is primarily a first-person shooter starring Jack Driscoll, the character played by Adrien Brody in the film. The E3 demo emphasized cooperation between the player and two AI characters, who would perform actions like opening gates while Jack protected from angry natives and tossing the player spears during a frantic whitewater river chase. Kong following Godzilla's sad claw prints?

6/24/05, 8:53 pm EST - Xoanon

Peter Howell writes: I'm prepared to extend Peter Jackson a reasonable amount of slack for his upcoming King Kong remake, because he did such a fine job with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. If anyone can pull off a successful retelling of a classic, Jackson can — even if no one was really clamouring for yet another version of the 1933 original. But the hype for Jackson's King Kong, scheduled for a Dec. 14 release, is starting to take on the bilious shades of another monstrous project: the 1998 Godzilla travesty. Remember all the "Size Matters" hoo-ha that preceded that disaster? For about a year before the film opened, we were inundated with billboard, poster and bus-shelter ads suggesting that the new Godzilla was going to be not just big in stature, but also in impact. Post Production Diary - 25 Weeks To Go

WETA Digital should sell tickets, they should setup a theme park type queue that winds through Wellington and allows eager geeks the chance to view some cool computer animation goodness. A robotic animatronic version of Richard Taylor should welcome the crowd as they enter the magical goodness that is WETA Digital...they should sell tickets at 2 thousand bucks a pop and make more money in one day than ever imagined. There should be a sign saying 'You must be THIS much of a geek to appreciate this tour'. The floors of the WETA Digital offices should be covered in foam to help break the fall of super-geeks passing out over the abundance of coolness coming out of that place at every corner...have I said enough? Have I whet you appetite for some of the amazing geeky goodness contained in this PPD? If so...take a look! [QT6 240x132px 8Mb] [QT4 320x176px 14Mb] [QT6 480x264px 18Mb] [Bit Torrents!]

Scanning for the stars

6/24/05, 11:00 am EST - Xoanon

Hollywood's biggest blockbusters, including the summer smash Batman Begins, come to Ottawa for help with their animation and special effects. It's 10 a.m. and Helmut Kungl is inside his new west-end Ottawa office, stumbling for the light switch. "I just got in," he said. "We are in the middle of a slow time right now. We are actually waiting for a bunch of things to come in. It should pick up again soon." From their tiny offices, Kungl and his crew have just finished work for three of this year's most anticipated blockbuster movies: King Kong, Aeon Flux and this week's big release Batman Begins. Kong Edges Out LoTR

6/23/05, 5:02 pm EST - Corvar

The original King Kong beats Peter Jackson's The Two Tower by a position in the AFI 100 Most Memorable Film Quotes. At number 84, "Oh, no, it wasn't the airplanes. It was Beauty killed the Beast." and at number 85, "My precious." Maybe if AFI redoes the list in a couple of years, PJ can get another entry. [More]

6/22/05, 1:03 pm EST - Celeborn

Kong fan RShow sends us this description of the clip being shown to promote the trailer release on Tuesday. Since its has minor spoilers, please highlight to read.

" Just wanted to let you know that I caught a preview of the King Kong clip. It was while I was at work, and I was in the break room at around 2:40am on 6-21-05. It showed a few long neck dino`s walking through the jungle and then it went to a woman standing in the jungle looking at a T-rex then out of nowhere these two hairy arms came down as though they were standing over top of the woman and I saw her turn around and looked up with a scared look on her face and not saying anything. At that time then it went off. From what I saw, it looks as though it may be a good movie. Just thought you would like to know. Take care & God Bless."
