Weta's cash to the rescue

Weta Workshop is helping its less glamorous namesake, one of New Zealand's biggest and ugliest insects. The Wellington special effects company responsible for the props and make-up in Peter Jackson's award-winning Lord of the Rings films is sponsoring research into Mahoenui giant weta in the central Waikato. The research, comprising hours of night surveys in the Warrenheip reserve, aims to determine whether efforts to save the threatened species are working. [More]

'King Kong' redo to go ape in city

King Kong's aiming to cast a giant shadow in New York. Universal Pictures, the studio behind an upcoming remake of "King Kong," is cooking up a massive marketing plan in the city for the gorilla flick, sources told the Daily News. In recent weeks, studio execs have been holding talks with city officials to discuss the feasibility and costs of a splashy media event. [More]

Video game giant Ubisoft has announced that it will unveil a new game, called Peter Jackson's King Kong, at the giant Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles next week. Unlike other video games based on movies, King Kong director Peter Jackson has collaborated on the game. "We really want the game and the film to be part of the same universe," he said. [More]

Two Universals May Become One

From IMDB: NBC Universal, which represents one of the few media mergers in which the acquired company (Universal) is performing better than the original buyer (GE/NBC), wants to buy back the remaining 20-percent stake that Vivendi Universal still holds in the company, the London Financial Times reported today (Tuesday). In an interview with the newspaper, NBC Universal Chairman and CEO Bob Wright said, "We have the right to call their stock in 2009 to the extent they haven't sold. ... It's possible that NBC Universal could be fully owned by GE by the end of the decade."

People in the press try different tactics to get celebrities’ attention, and one enterprising red carpet denizen (At the Project A.L.S. gala on Friday) got Jack Black’s by pointing to a photographer and saying, “This woman needs a hug!” The mortified victim protested, but to no avail; Black gave her a big bear hug, and she started laughing so hard that she was crying. LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)- The original King Kong from the 1933 film was only 18 inches tall. Fans of Peter Jackson's updated "Kong" will be able to purchase toys of nearly that size under a new line of Playmates goodies recently unveiled. Peter Jackson's "King Kong" will be released by Universal Pictures on Dec. 14 and the film, Jackson's follow-up to his Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, is expected to have audiences in a tizzy this Holiday Season.
