King Kong Goes Big in Madrid

4/05/06, 8:45 pm EST - Xoanon

King Kong Goes Big in Madrid Javier writes: On Tuesday the 4th of April, the King Kong DVD was introduced to the Spanish market with a presentation in the centre of Madrid. A 1 hour editing with the best sequences of the movie was projected on the huge 900 m2 facade of a department store in Paseo de la Castellana, together with an 8000 watt sound system. The parking lot of the department store was decorated like a 'jungle'. It had plants and props, ambient sounds and many King Kong posters. It was very promising since it was supposed to be the biggest projection area in Europe, but the quality of the projection was quite disappointing. They didn't cover the facade with a white screen, so you could see the beams and the tile unions of the building through the movie, and the intensity of the projector's light was not strong enough for an outdoor show of these characteristics. It was great fun anyway and a different way of seeing the movie. [Photos]

'Gorgo' Brings The 'King Kong' Legacy To London

4/04/06, 9:44 pm EST - Xoanon

"Like Nothing You've Ever Seen Before!" declared a theatrical poster for the 1961 monster-on-the-loose movie "Gorgo." Even then it wasn't true. Movies about a monster that lays waste to one of the world's major cities were never more popular than in the 1950s. "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" demolished New York in 1953. "Godzilla" attacked Tokyo in 1954. In 1955 the tentacles of a giant octopus took a swipe at San Francisco in "It Came From Beneath the Sea." And after travelling "20 Million Miles to Earth" in 1957 the Venusian Ymir tore up Rome. Despite relying on a tried and tested formula, though, "Gorgo" was a huge hit in its day and can now be seen again on DVD. [More]

Serkis goes ape over King Kong

4/02/06, 8:55 pm EST - Xoanon

He had the biggest role in the movies last year, but Andy Serkis doesn't have to worry about fans and paparazzi. Serkis, as you well know, created the title character in King Kong, Peter Jackson's giant movie. Before that, Serkis -- wearing a motion-capture suit, as he did for Kong -- played and voiced Gollum, the twisted creature in Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. But Serkis isn't entirely unrecognizable. "It's funny -- with Gollum and now Kong, I always thought that I'd be completely anonymous," says the 41-year-old British actor, "but because of DVDs and behind-the-scenes stuff and Kong Diaries, yeah, people do recognize me, not to an unhealthy extent. I have a certain amount of anonymity, and certainly professionally I'm not typecast. Well, it's not that you can be typecast, because there aren't that many roles for 25-foot gorillas." [More]
