Monkey of the Moment

4/03/05, 12:15 pm EST - Xoanon

"King Kong" is certainly no reticent gorilla to Oscar-winning "The Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson. For the last six months, Jackson has been toiling in his native New Zealand on the big-budget remake of the 1933 classic adventure romance — and the 1976 dud — about the beauty who killed the beast. Fan sites can't wait for King Kong remake

4/02/05, 10:33 am EST - Xoanon

The fans do such a great job selling their favourite movies, you have to wonder sometimes why studios bother spending millions on their own promotions. Peter Jackson hasn't yet opened an official website to trumpet his Christmas 2005 remake of King Kong, starring Andy Serkis in the ape suit and Naomi Watts as the new Fay Wray, the object of simian obsession. But visiting KongisKing.net, a highly professional site that looks like the real deal, could fool you. [More]

Peter Jackson's $3 Million Dollar 'Venture' ship sinks off the coast of Wellington; rust blamed.

4/01/05, 8:26 am EST - Xoanon

The ship used in Peter Jackson's "King Kong" remake sank offshore near Wellington early this morning. Publicist Melissa Booth commented that the age of the ship and recent remodeling for filming contributed to its sinking. "It was a very old ship when we purchased it," she said, adding, "We managed to get the entire crew onto the life rafts before she started to seriously take on water.” She stated that no one was injured in the incident. Annalisa writes: I just noticed that La Repubblica, an italian newspaper, had just posted an article about King Kong. Probably the journalist that has written it was one of the few international journalists that have seen the first 20 minutes footage that Peter Jackson showed in this days!! Here it is a little interwiew to Peter that speaks about making the movie and about all the problems he went through to make it. (Article is in Italian) [repubblica.it]

newratings.com apparently lists stocks on the move in the US stock market. They've listed FUN.AU as one to watch, they say PJ's Kong movie tie in doesn't boost the stock, but makes FUN stand out as a place that can nab big time contracts. It's all greek to me! [More]

Production Diary: Day 120
Peter Jackson updates us on the state of affairs in the last few days of photography on King Kong. He shows us some great blue screen footage and some great shots of the wrap party! Sets are being built, even this late into production, and sadly...some are being destroyed. And...am I wrong or did Dan Hennah and Peter Jackson mention something about...another Kong film? Anthony Cox writes: My friend and I have gone into King Kong over drive! So much that we did a tribute to Peter and the gang by making our own Production Diary. Alternatively, because there is a limit as to how much can be downloaded from these web pages, you can access my public iDisk if you are running Mac OS X.

In the FINDER menu click on the GO tab > iDisk > Other User's Public Folder, it will prompt you for a username, enter anthonyjcox and simply drop and drag the desired file.

K Bacon sends this along: Windows XP users can download and install this utility. If they're using Windows 2000, open My Computer, choose Map Network Drive from the Tools menu, then click "Web folder or FTP site." Enter the following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/anthonyjcox-Public?

If they're using Windows 98, open My Computer, double-click the Web Folders icon, then double-click Add Web Folder. Enter the following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/anthonyjcox-Public?

Director has always been brilliant

3/29/05, 6:30 pm EST - Xoanon

Kahlen Burgwin writes: It would be easy to write off Peter Jackson’s earlier works as mere stepping stone to his cinematic holy grail, the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Low-budget splatter films about alien invasions or zombie infestations rarely gain fame as they age, and most directors or stars would often prefer that films such as those simply disappear from their resumés once they hit the big time. Not Jackson, though. He has repeatedly stated how fond he is of his earlier works. Listed below are Jackson’s essential early works, in order of essential viewing. [More]

The Spirit of Kong: Legacies and Horizons

3/29/05, 2:02 pm EST - Xoanon

Atomicmutant writes: As we all look forward to the release of Kong 2005, these boards are full of speculation and discussion about how the new Kong will honor the original. Will Kong look like 1933? Should he? Will this scene, or that be replicated? Will there be a spider scene? These discussions caused me to think about Kong in a larger context and to begin to examine the legacy that brought us all here in the first place (and as you'll see, yes, I'm also talking about LOTR and Peter Jackson fans). So here are some musings about the legacy of Kong that hopefully in some ways illuminate my thoughts beyond a simple paean to dinosaurs, jungles, and giant apes. [More]
