Box-office beasts of burden?

12/07/05, 7:52 pm EST - Xoanon

LOS ANGELES — With roughly three weeks left in Hollywood's mediocre movie year, it's up to a lion and an ape to save the day. Studio executives will be looking to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which opens Friday, and King Kong, which swings onto screens Dec. 14, to help erase the half-billion-dollar deficit between last year's ticket sales and this year's. And though it's unlikely that the animals will muster that much magic at the box office, they could get moviegoers excited again about coming to theaters and propel the industry to a strong start next year. Nation builds on hobbits' momentum

12/07/05, 7:48 pm EST - Xoanon

It's a snowbound land, full of mythical creatures, that is entered through the back of a wardrobe. But for New Zealand, Narnia is a lot more than just the setting for a new Hollywood movie. It's the chance to generate another big series of movies to follow the phenomenon that was The Lord of the Rings. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, based on a classic children's novel by C. S. Lewis, has been made by the director Andrew Adamson (who also made Shrek and Shrek 2) on a reported budget of $US150 million ($200 million). It centres on four children who accidently enter Narnia then join a battle between an evil witch and a god-like lion. [More]

Weta chief passionate about home and work

KongisKing Red Carpet Photos - Richard Taylor NEW YORK: Thirty five floors up in New York's Mandarin Hotel, overlooking snow-carpeted Central Park, Richard Taylor is talking about the ions in Wellington's air. The Weta Workshop chief is passionate about home and as a source of inspiration for his work. "This is humanity run amok," he says, glancing at the dizzying skyline of towering skyscrapers and traffic bustling far below. "It's amazing for a few days." Wellington's geography and climate may intimidate lesser souls, but it invigorates Taylor. It is the centre of his world. He cannot imagine being so productive in a smoggy centre such as Los Angeles. Te Papa strike unusual deal with Jackson

12/07/05, 7:35 pm EST - Xoanon

Museum of New Zealand Te Papa has bumped a New Zealand art exhibition aside to make way for a money-spinning Lord of the Rings repeat, in a deal secured with a highly unusual payment. Filmmaker and aviation enthusiast Peter Jackson agreed to a second six-month exhibition on the condition the museum located and bought for him a vintage Sopwith Camel airplane engine. Te Papa spokesman Peter Brewer said a deal on an engine found somewhere in the northern hemisphere should be settled by Christmas. The engine cost "a fraction of the amount" the museum would otherwise have had to pay Jackson in licensing fees, he said. It is understood Te Papa paid trilogy backers New Line Cinemas up to $500,000 for the first Rings' exhibition in 2003. The studio had since signed over the licensing rights to Jackson. [More]

Monkey business inspired a career

12/07/05, 2:21 pm EST - Xoanon

Compared with his work as an Oscar-winning director and the filmmaker behind the most popular trilogy in movie history, Peter Jackson's first attempt to remake "King Kong" was by any measure amateurish. Jackson painted the Manhattan skyline on an old bedsheet, constructed the Empire State Building out of cardboard and pinched his mother's shawl to craft the giant gorilla's fur. It didn't look like much, Jackson admits, but then again he was 13 years old. [More]

Jackson Defends Kong Length

12/07/05, 2:01 pm EST - Xoanon

Peter Jackson, director of the upcoming King Kong remake, defended the movie's length—three hours and seven minutes—and told SCI FI Wire that it could have been even longer. By contrast, the original 1933 film, which served as the template for Jackson's remake, ran only 100 minutes. "Three hours," Jackson said with a sigh during a news conference in New York last week. "Ah, the three-hour question. Yes, ... I know. I've got a problem. I feel like I have. No, we thought that movie would be about two hours 10 minutes, two hours 15 [minutes]. And after doing the Lord of the Rings films I really didn't feel that I wanted to make another three-hour film, because they're hard work. It gets to be very intense to have to do post-production on a film that long. And we thought with the original film being one hour 40 [minutes] that we would be okay." [More]

Kong Review in The Hollywood Reporter

12/07/05, 1:55 pm EST - Xoanon

The gorilla is great, the girl terrific, sets are out of this world, creatures icky as hell, and the director clearly does not believe in the word "enough." The new "King Kong" from Peter Jackson is both the measure of what striking images the world's most imaginative filmmakers can now put onscreen with digital effects, motion capture, models and miniatures and the drawback to these very toys. 'King Kong' premiere swings into Times Square

12/07/05, 1:48 pm EST - Xoanon

NEW YORK — Bigger truly is better when it comes to King Kong. The supersized remake of the 1933 classic film, about an oversized ape who is taken from his home on Skull Island to Manhattan to become a sideshow attraction and is ultimately soothed by the love of blond actress Ann Darrow (in this case, Naomi Watts), had its world premiere in Times Square Monday night. Universal, the studio behind the film, erected a massive statue of Kong and screened the three-hour action/thriller/love story in two multiplexes. The revelry continued at the jungle-themed after-party on the Hudson River, where dogs performed in a canine burlesque and the VIPs frolicked in their own roped-off area away from the hoi polloi. Jackson and stars Adrien Brody, Jack Black, Naomi Watts and Andy Serkis attended the event, while a 20ft King Kong model dominated Times Square. Jackson leaves Kong in fate's hands

12/06/05, 8:47 pm EST - Xoanon

On this New York early winter morning, the top of the Empire State Building is coated in heavy cloud, the Manhattan streets below are slippery with snow, and the temperature hovers around zero. A few blocks away inside a chintzy hotel room above Park Avenue, Peter Jackson's own observation deck is stuck in its own mental fog. Granted, he has been a bit busy at work. He nearly always is in December. Though this time last year was relatively light, a bit of a breather after the consecutive releases of the Lord of the Rings trilogy which became the cinematic grand finales of 2001-2003. [More]

Peter Jackson Interview: Dark Horizons

12/06/05, 8:42 pm EST - Xoanon

Paul writes: New Zealand's Oscar winning Peter Jackson first fell in love with the 1933 King Kong when he was a mere 9 years old. Now, a few decades later and the gargantuan success of Lord of the Rings behind him, Jackson has fulfilled his life long ambition by bringing the mighty Kong to the screen as only this director can. Looking far more svelte than the last time we met and surprisingly more subdued, Paul Fischer caught up with the director in New York. [More]

R2 1933 King DVD's Way Too Vanilla -UPDATE-

12/06/05, 7:11 pm EST - Xoanon

Tony from Scotland let me in on the fact that Warner's Region 2 (Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland) 1933 King Kong Collector's Edition DVD set contains none of the wondrous extra features and documentaries available on the Region 1 release. The only suggestion we have is to let Warners Distributors in those countries know you WANT the extra features for the R2 release! Sadly the only alternative is to buy a region free DVD player.

UPDATE: Chris sends along a little more information about this. [More]

12/06/05, 6:23 pm EST - Xoanon

NEW YORK (AFP) - Peter Jackson, director of the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy, has chosen to follow up that mega-success with a remake of the movie classic "King Kong," the mammoth ape that terrorized Manhattan, debuting on screens around the world 14 December. The movie was to have its red carpet rollout in New York City Monday, appropriately enough, just blocks from the Empire State Building, the famed skyscraper that shares top billing in the movie with Hollywood Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody. This gorilla of a film is blockbuster of the year

12/03/05, 11:24 am EST - Xoanon

Just over a year ago, Oscar-winning film-maker Peter Jackson stood on the mammoth Skull Island set he had built on a peninsula in New Zealand and told me why he loved King Kong. Speaking about Merian Cooper's classic 1933 movie, Jackson said: "The original Kong is a wonderful blend - probably the most perfect blend - of escapism and adventure, mystery and romance. It does everything an escapist movie should do: it takes you places you are never going to see and gives you experiences you are never going to have." [More]

Kong's Black Aped Welles

12/03/05, 11:08 am EST - Xoanon

Jack Black, who stars as obsessive filmmaker Carl Denham in director Peter Jackson's upcoming King Kong remake, told SCI FI Wire that he modeled the character in large part on Orson Welles and even worked in a bit of Jackson. In the film, the larger-than-life Denham will risk anything and anyone in order to make a career-saving movie. Welles, of course, is the legendary maker of Citizen Kane. "I was playing the director in the movie, and so, of course, my first instinct that I thought was brilliant and no one would know—it'd be my secret—is I'd base it on Peter Jackson," Black said in an interview. "So I'm already heavy, and then he was skinny. 'Wait a second! I got to lose weight.'" [More]

NY set to cast critical eye over Kong

12/03/05, 11:07 am EST - Xoanon

NEW YORK: King Kong is a fantasy epic set in the metropolis of New York - but the movie was made in New Zealand. The classic 1933 movie holds a special place in New Yorkers' hearts, and they will be looking at Peter Jackson's 2005 film with critical eyes when it screens for the first time in the Big Apple this weekend. Jackson and his team won a staggering 11 Oscars for The Return of the King, the third instalment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It may be a hard act to follow, as remakes of classics have no guarantee of success. [More]

What kind of man would trick people into boarding a rusty old ship leaving New York, risking their lives and his own on a treacherous voyage in search of a lost island? If moviegoers respond as positively to the film as the press did Wednesday night following its world-premiere screening here, the new, $207-million (U.S.) Kong could be the 500-lb. gorilla that wrests the year's box-office crown from Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia and all other challengers to the blockbuster throne. Wired: King Kong Game Gets Five Bananas

12/01/05, 8:19 am EST - Xoanon

Movie games aren't supposed to be this good. As my onscreen alter ego runs through a dense jungle, my real-life heart pounds. A great, shrieking dinosaur pops out of the brush as I realize that I ran out of ammo long ago. I dive for a pile of bones lying on the ground, pick one up and javelin-toss it into the beast's throat. How the hell is next month's King Kong movie going to compete with this? To create Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie, the celebrated director teamed with talented game designer Michel Ancel, whose Beyond Good & Evil won critical acclaim for its cinematic presentation. Kong is an even better game than Ancel's last. [More]

This should have a very dreamy quality, very mysterioso. Winds, just keep it very delicate. Violins and violas, come in at bar 18 but pianissimo. I need a warm, muted sound. ..." Monkey See DVD

11/30/05, 5:28 pm EST - Xoanon

Andy Klein: If you were me – and don’t try it, because there isn’t enough room in this identity for the both of us – the upcoming film that you’d be anticipating with the greatest hope and the greatest anxieties is Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong. For a number of obvious reasons, remaking Kong is a lousy idea. The 1933 original is quite perfectly what it is; very few film buffs would be interested in changing a frame. It’s not merely that it was great when it was first released – which it most certainly was. Or that it still works for almost everyone, except the “who wants to watch black-and-white films” crowd and those who are incapable of suspending their campy ironic distance for a second. [More]
