BFME Review on Gamespy
Xoanon @ 10:27 am EST
Most games with a literary or movie license don't always live up to the mystique of that license. Without the familiar setting, the game could just as easily be a generic RTS or RPG. The obvious reason for the license is to draw in fans, but those fans can become the toughest critics if the game doesn't measure up. Enter The Battle for Middle-earth, touched by the Tolkien license and Peter Jackson's films, and imbued with the personality of the team that created Red Alert 2 and C&C Generals. While veteran RTS players may have some nits to pick with the relatively solid gameplay, those same fans of The Lord of the Rings series should find that the game shines as a playable re-creation of Tolkien's work. The game is a perfect example of a license enhancing the final product. [More]Pre-Order your Copy Today! The Lord Of The Rings Tradeable Miniatures Game-1 Year Later
Xoanon @ 10:22 pm EST
It has been just over a year since The Lord of the Rings Tradeable Miniatures Game from Sabertooth Games brought Tolkien’s Middle-earth to the gaming table with the all new Combat Hex® gaming system. Since the initial release of the 120 figure Base Set (BS) in October 2003 Sabertooth has brought avid gamers and Tolkienists alike such exciting new products as The Fellowship of the Ring (FE) Expansion, 2 Map Packs, and 3 Premium Line (PL) Figures. In addition, they have many new releases planned for Christmas Time 2004 and many more throughout 2005.This year brought us the FE Expansion with 80 new figures from The Fellowship of the Ring movie along with new and exciting special abilities and strategies. Included here are favorites from the Second Age such as Elendil, Isildur, and the Numenorians. The Map Packs bring new and exciting terrain for the armies of Middle-earth to wage their battles upon. The individual maps can be put together to form much larger maps for even larger battles. The Premium Line figures have brought the likes of the Cave Troll (along with new versions of Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli), Sauron, and Treebeard (with new versions of Merry and Pippin) to the battlefield. These PL figures stand on multiple hexes, as opposed to the single hexes of the current BS and FE figures, and they tower over the populace of Middle-Earth. As 2004 ends and 2005 begins Sabertooth has planned a whole bunch of new surprises. By year’s end we can expect to see the mighty Balrog hit the gaming table. He stands on 9 hexes and comes with an all new and more powerful version of Gandalf the Grey. We can also expect to see a Dice Tin this year. This dice tin contains 8 special dice for the game: 4 Cave Troll dice, 3 jeweled Eye of Sauron dice, and 1 glow in the dark The Paths of the Dead die. Last, but not least, the end of 2004 will bring The Two Towers (TT) expansion. With approximately 80 new figures we will see the first double hex, mounted (cavalry) figures. These guys will add an exciting new aspect to this already, fun, easy-to-learn strategy game. Lavishly detailed role-play game features 'Rings' second string
Xoanon @ 5:31 pm EST
For each of the last three years, we got three epic "The Lord of the Rings" movies. Now we're near the end of 2004, and Tolkien fans are going into withdrawal because there's no new film to look forward to. At least there's the extended-edition DVD of "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," as well as the lavish role-playing video game, "The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age," which takes players into the wartime lives of the "Rings" second string. Middle Earth Online Cancelled? -UPDATE-
Xoanon @ 10:17 pm EST
Zeiger writes: I had pre-ordered Middle Earth Online through Gamestop. Tonight I received an automated telephone message from them informing me that the game has been cancelled, and that I should visit the store for more information and to reallocate the reservation funds. I wanted to let you know ASAP, of course. Hopefully, you might be able to shed some light on this, as I am sure we have all been looking forward to this boon not only to the Tolkien gaming, but also online, community.UPDATE MEO fans far and wide have written in to say that MEO has NOT been cancelled. The error may be due to mistaken reports that Gamestop MAY be cancelling thier orders of the game, not the game itself.

Fan Review of Third Age
Luthien @ 9:37 am EST
RPG fan LegolasFan411 has written a lovely review of EA's Third Age: The Lord of the Ring's The Third Age is definitely one of the better RPG's of our time. It is probably the first of its kind for EA games, but hopefully not the last. There is a deep storyline into the game, one much different than the movies themselves. By the halfway point in the game, you will have gotten all 6 of the playable characters, each with unique abilities and traits. [More] Thanks, LegolasFan411! LOTR: The Third Age Review
Xoanon @ 7:36 pm EST
The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy has proved to be fertile source material for video game adaptations, spawning hack-and-slash action adventures as well as a soon-to-be-released real-time strategy title. The Third Age, however, is a turn-based, console-style role-playing game that takes a slightly different path from its film-faithful cousins. Instead of featuring the original cast of characters and following their journey as it was laid out in the films and novels, The Third Age introduces a new cross-cultural group of travelers as they put their own stamp on the history of Middle-earth. While there are some rough edges, the result is mostly a nice little role-playing jaunt into the world of Tolkien. [More]
