Games-Workshop News
Xoanon @ 1:31 pm EST

From: DVDrew

Thought I'd pass along the info that the Games Workshop is releasing their 2001 Holiday Catalog. I'm not sure if it has LOTR stuff in it, but it is free. When I called their mail order number to get one I asked about the release dates for the LOTR stuff. He said they were expecting a Nov 7 release for much of it and that they are currently taking telephone preorders for all of the FOTR merchandise. I asked what was in various sets and prices but didn't write most of it down as the list is on their web site (www.gamesworkshop.com). I added a few Ringwraiths (for $8.99 each) to my previous order and the Battle at Khazad Dum set (contains Gandalf and the Balrog for $44.99). He added that the Balrog is bigger than any of their dragons (which is pretty damn big for a miniature). Don't forget to order paint and primer, too.

You can call Games Worshop at:
1-800-394-4263 in the USA
1-888-GW-TROLL in Canada

Grab a free catalog because all of their miniatures are worth a look as they are spectacular!

MTG Planet Decipher Review
Berendir @ 1:23 pm EST

From Ted Vessenes

The Lord of the Rings card game by Decipher will be released in two weeks, but I was one of the lucky few chosen to preview it. My review is featured at MtG Planet, a Magic: The Gathering fan site. Short Synopsis: Excellent strategy game, great job of representing the quest of the ring. Get some starter decks when this game is released. [More]

Roleplaying Dwarves
Berendir @ 8:28 pm EST

RPGnet put up an interesting article on Dwarves, their origins, differences, and most important, how they are role played.

If investigating the archetypology of dwarves was like choosing a fine wine, then 1937 would be the finest vintage you could ask for. Two pieces of fantasy fiction were released that year which would forever after set the dwarven archetype in stone (pun intended)--Tolkien's The Hobbit, and Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. And when you compare them side by side, Sleepy, Dopey, Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Doc, and Bashful are really no different from Dwalin, Balin, Fili, Kili, Dori, Nori and Ori, except for the fact that the latter 7 are also joined by Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur (and a certain Hobbit, of course).[More]

Revival of War of the Ring?
Berendir @ 12:41 am EST

WotR was published by the paper-wargaming company Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) in the 1970s. It was one of their most elaborate presentations, with a large mounted map, cards, a gazillion little cardboard counters representing the armies of the War of the Ring, and artwork by (then) popular Tolkien artist Tim Kirk.[More]

Gollum In Quake?
Berendir @ 2:27 pm EST

Anyone familiar with "The Lord Of The Rings" is familiar with the story of Smeagol/Gollum. A creature possibly of Halfling lineage whose friend Deagol found "the one ring" made by Sauron. At once corrupted by its evil magic, Smeagol murdered his friend Deagol and took the ring for himself. Cast out from among his own people (who named him "Gollum" when he took to muttering and gurgling in his throat), he hid in the orc mines beneath the Misty Mountains. The magic of the ring gave him immortality...[More]

Amazing, the influence of Tolkien has spread even to the Quake frontier. Thanks to Tifhany for bringing this to my attention, i'm sure all the Quake/LOTR fans out there will be glad to know.

Update: DarthCaeser reported on this story on 8/20/01: My favorite character is Gollum and he's sort of the reason I'm writing. There is a "skin" of Gollum for the PC game Unreal Tournament. You can find it at http://www.planetunreal.com/skincity/. He is on page 9 of the Models/Converted page."

My mistake, the skin was originally created for Unreal tournament, another first person shoot'em up game. Thanks also to Chris for pointing this out.
