Games Workshop doing a LOTR Game?
Xoanon @ 11:27 am EST

From: about a million and one Ringer Spies :)

Games Workshop have seemingly secured the rights for producing a game based on LOTR. Details can be found here.

Games Workshop Press Release:

Games Workshop Secures Lord of the Rings Licensing Deal

We are extremely pleased to announce that Games Workshop has signed a worldwide exclusive agreement with New Line Productions Inc, to design a tabletop wargame based on the forthcoming Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

“We are confident that the combination of the Lord of the Rings story, the huge pre-awareness of the films, and Games Workshop’s top flight game and model design skills will produce an outstanding series of tabletop battlegames. The opportunity to work on this game was one we couldn’t ignore, especially as it was Tolkien’s work which, in part, inspired the fantasy wargaming hobby. The game will appeal to our existing customers, Lord of the Rings fans and new players alike.” Michael Sherwin, Chief Financial Officer of Games Workshop.

David Imhoff, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Licensing & Merchandising, of New Line Inc Productions adds: “Games Workshop is the world leader in creating tabletop battle games. With their 25 years of successful experience, they are the clear choice for this project. We believe Games Workshop will be a great fit for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.”

The rules will be written by Rick Priestley, creator of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000, and the game, miniatures and other associated hobby products will receive the full attention of Games Workshop's best designers and artists.

The Lord of the Rings film trilogy is based on the J.R.R Tolkien's classic series of fantasy books, which were collectively voted as the 'Book of the Century' last year. The films are currently in production in New Zealand with the first film "The Fellowship of the Ring", slated for December 2001 release. Peter Jackson, whose credits include "Heavenly Creatures" and "The Frighteners", is directing the trilogy. The international cast features Sir Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Liv Tyler, and Elijah Wood.

Quickbeam on LOTR Board Games
Berendir @ 7:32 pm EST

Quickbeam over at the Greenbooks has put up his latest post, and its on LOTR Board Games!

I am a fervent fan of gaming. Be it strategy game, party game, dice, trivia, fantasy role-playing, collectible card–you name it, I have surely played it. One of my favorites has become something of a hobby, the wonderful Dragon Dice game (imagine a cross between Risk and Magic: the Gathering and you’ve got the best collectible dice game there is). I’ve played in tournaments across the West coast, even claiming the title of Western Regional Champion.

Siege of Khazad-Dum Part IV
Berendir @ 10:01 pm EST

Greetings everyone! It has been some days since I've been able to report to you, but rest assured the details of our progress, and downfall will be shared.

The orders on whether to use our oil to burn the enemy, or lure them back into the depths of Khazad-dum and attack them from behind again was so close, that once again we resorted to a combination of the two!

We brought out our small catapults, loaded rocks and oil onto them and lit them up with torches! The rocks were as hot as a forge I say, and they smote the enemy and drove them back, even as a barrage of flaming arrows rained upon them! Mind you our archers aren't very skilled, as arrows are not a Dwarven specialty, but it worked enough to force them to either retreat, or throw a full out assault.

Well, as it were they attacked and with all their might! We were taken aback at first by the ferocity that they showed, though once inside we sprung our attack from behind, this time trapping most of the enemy between our forces.

While things appeared to be going well, our army was quickly dwindeling despite the heavier casualties on the enemy side. All reports say the enemy is now 300 strong, and only a few remaining trolls.

The bad news is that we were forced back into the main chambers in the center of Khazad-dum, with only 105 of us to defend! We have enough food and oil to last two months yet, since some of our stock was destroyed in the confusion.

I fear this could be the last stand... If we should fall here, then all hopes of regaining Khazad-dum should die with us. At all costs we must hold out!

Once again it is your choice, make your vote count by using the Poll to let us know what course of action to take!

Aragorn... Not in Final Fantasy 8?
Berendir @ 10:57 am EST

A few days back Dargon sent an email mentioning how there was an enemy boss at the end of Final Fantasy 8 named Aragorn. That post can be viewed, Here.

Well, just yesterday Gandalf, a friend of mine whose a Ringer staff sent this into me:

In the game Final Fantasy 8 you play as the character Squall Leonheart. In the game Squall wears a mysterious ring and you get to name this ring. At the end of the game, when you fight the main boss, Ultimecia, she will summon a monster to fight you. This monster's name depends on what you named the ring. So if you named it Aragorn it would be Aragorn.

Apparently he named his ring Griever, and the boss's name was Griever, and thats how he found out.

Well, I guess squaresoft isn't naming any characters by famous Tolkien characters, or at least that we know of.

Dagorhir Battle Games
Berendir @ 2:19 pm EST

Ever been reading the LOTR, or the Silmarillion and thought it might be fun to grab a sword and see how many orcs you could slay? Well, here's the next best thing!

You've only read Tolkien. We live it in Dagorhir Battle Games! Tolkien's Middle Earth meets Dark Age Europe in this safe, action-packed national battle game.

Dagorhir has been in existence since 1977. This game has grown to national proportions in the since the late 1980's. Chapters, or "realms," have grown from Michigan to Florida, and from Washington, DC (where Dagorhir was founded) to Los Angeles, California. These realms all congregate for a national War every June in Ohio. This war is called Ragnarok, and it draws hundreds of Tolkien and medieval combat enthusiasts from all over the country.

Dagorhir weapons are padded, and minimum safety requirements are stringently enforced to ensure the safety of the participants. Minimum costume requirements are also enforced. Participants ages 16 and up may compete on battlefields across the country. The rules emphasize safety and playability, to keeping the game fast and fun. While Dagorhir is athletic, you don't have to be an athlete to successfully compete. There is a niche for everyone. Dagorhir challenges the mind and body, and inspires the imagination. Dagorhir is a living, breathing, and growing celebration of Tolkien's works.

Please take time to view the Dagorhir website. Chances are there is a Dagorhir chapter right in your home state. If not, we'll gladly assist you in starting one. Why dream of the life when you can live the dream? Join yesterday's fun
today!

Thanks to Sean from Dagorhir for sending us the info!

Best Middle Earth Play-By-Mail Game
Berendir @ 10:30 pm EST

It appears theres a popular LOTR game out there, and its a play by mail one, which picked up an award the other night.

The evening was dominated by two things (other than James Ernest's incredible wit): Wizards of the Coast products and the gaming industry's apparent love affair with dead cowboys. Wizards of the Coast snagged 13 awards for the night, plus received a special treat when both Richard Garfield and the Magic: the Gathering trading Card Game were inducted into the Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame.

Best Ongoing Play-by-Mail Game
Middle Earth PBM Fourth Age Circa 1000 from Game Systems, Inc.

Aragorn in Final Fantasy Eight?
Berendir @ 6:06 pm EST

I got this email from Dargon, regarding his adventures in Final Fantasy:

Maybe someone has pointed this out before, but I just found this today.I was playing one of the greatest video game series of all time(Final Fantasy, FF8 to be exact) I made it to the final boss and the boss summons this gigantic creature to do battle with me. And the name of this giant creature? ARAGORN!! (OK, so it's a character of good in a bad guy's body, but hey, it's still cool!) I almost didn't want to kill the creature, but I had to beat the game. Maybe the makers of Final Fantasy (Squaresoft) would be
interested in making a LOTR video game for PS2! That would be the greatest (after the movies of course).

If any Final Fantasy experts out there know of any other mention of LOTR characters within the games let me know at Berendir@theonering.net

And yes, that would be pretty cool if Squaresoft were to make a LOTR RPG! Lets just hope its more like FF9 and less like FF8.

"Siege of Khazad-dum part 3" Melee Within the Gates!
Berendir @ 8:04 pm EST

I report back with the details of a glorius victory, and yet at the same time tidings of terrible woe. I will impart the good news first, to lighten the blow of the bad, before we decide upon the next course of action.

The plan you suggested worked like hammer work! We withdrew our guarding forces near the East gate deep within Khazad-dum, causing our enemies to swarm after us. We didn't go too deep, not wanting to draw more then we could handle within, when the trap was sprung! Behind the enemy came a surge of Dwarven Axe throwers, euipt with smaller throwing axes and one handed axes, due to the small area within the corridors they were forced to do battle in.

As fate would have it the Trolls were simply too large to wield their war mattocks and were quickly caught between an anvil and a hammer, *a popular Dwarven quote*, and slaughtered. However, many of the humans escaped into the pits of Khazad-dum and are now being persued by our huntsman. By nightfall they will all be slain, for we know our home much better then they.

Now I must deliver the grave report... During the battle one of the previously sent out Dwarven scouts returned with a nasty wound on the head. He reported back to us that the band of Dwarves we sent out to find aid was waylaid during the night. While he was not certain, it was in his belief all were killed and he was the lone survivor. We must abandon hope of a rescue, unless by some miracle there are those out there who know of our plight.

Now, for the next decision. The East gate has been successfully blockaded, and the remaining defense force of some 410 Dwarves has been sent to aid in the stand against the western gate attack. A small force was left behind at the East gate should the enemy find power or battering ram with enough force to crush our already weakened gate.

While theres supplies enough to last for a bit, if the onslaught proves too great we may not be able to hold out much longer. We are losing defenders! The enemy numbers have been cut down by the recent victory inside our halls, but not by enough. I await your orders noble fans!

Baruk Khazad! Khazad Ai-Menu!
